Session Submission Summary

Preparing Social Justice Teachers: Rethinking Action Research Curriculum for Transformation

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 222

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

The session reexamines constructs of collaboration, transformation and engagement with action research through a critical analysis of the curriculum that shapes the learners’ experiences. As teacher educators in five different contexts, each panelist brings a commitment to social justice and views engagement with action research as critical to personal, political and professional change. We offer analyses of transformation in action research experiences using qualitative, case study, and conceptual tools to uncover the challenges and possibilities of action research curriculum. The authors argue that (1) collaboration and community; and (2) key structural and cultural threads of classroom and school life need to be embedded in action research curriculum to foster pedagogies that offer transformation for students and teachers.
