What Chinese Students Really Know and Can Do: Evidence Beyond the Data From PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2009

Abstract

The high performance of Chinese students as reported in the Shanghai-China PISA 2009 studies has raised the interests of educators all over the world in the Chinese education system. However, the special situation of Shanghai relative to the rest of China makes this finding somewhat misleading because of the limited representativeness of the sample. The purpose of the proposed symposium is to address this issue by augmenting PISA data with a second data set collected from six cities/districts across China. A variety of issues and questions with regard to academic achievement will be addressed by the collection of papers in the symposium. The goal is to provide a more contextualized picture of the Chinese education and promote more productive and broader discussions on student achievement among educators across the world.
