Session Submission Summary

Critical Social Justice Education Through Human Rights Education Praxis

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Currently in the U.S., there are very few universities that offer graduate degrees in Human Rights Education. This fact is striking, given its urgent need in our post-9/11 world and the growing interest in this field abroad. This session highlights doctoral research in the first graduate level program in Human Rights Education in the nation. The program seeks to: 1) provide graduate education for those who want to continue study in this field; 2) offer training in instruction and curriculum development in Human Rights for preservice and inservice teachers as well as community educators; and 3) provide skills in taking action in the arena of international human rights. Papers in this session use the Human Rights Education framework to extend existing discourse on social justice education.
