(Im)Possibilities of Alternative Representation of Reality, Memory, and Research in the Crisis of Representation

Abstract

The focus of this symposium is to analyze and discuss the crisis of representation as it relates to both the epistemology that is often termed knowledge as well as the ontology that is often termed experience. This presentation centers on the insufficiencies of language, the limited capacity of a researcher to address multiple realities, and the production of meaning. We posit that multiple representations cannot appropriate reality or “truth” at all and invite the audience to consider how the connection to our “realities” are discursively, contextually, and socially constructed. Finally, this presentation provides for the possibility of alternative directions for qualitative research in this crisis of representation.
