Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Programme for International Student Assessment (OECD PISA) is a standardised assessment that is administered to 15-year-olds in schools on a three-year cycle. In PISA 2009, in which 67 countries and economies participated, the major focus of the assessment was on reading, and for the first time an assessment of digital reading was included as an option in the survey. This symposium will use the results of the PISA 2009 reading assessments to i) elucidate the construct of digital reading by examining its constituent parts; ii) examine the influence of background variables such as student engagement and gender on performance in reading; and iii) offer an explanation for differential item performance on reading items.
