Youth Resistance Across Neoliberal Contexts

Abstract

What does youth resistance do? Does it do what we think it does? The papers in this symposium engage these questions across a variety of neoliberal contexts: urban Native youths’ resistance to place-based pedagogies in a Canadian context, rural youths’ resistance to townization and schooling in Northwest China, youth resistance in an elite prep school in New England, school dropout as a form of youth biopolitical resistance in a New York City context, and LGBTQ street youth resistance to school and institutional violence in a Californian city. Panelists update and offer new theorizations of youth resistance, especially with respect to neoliberal developments in relations among capital, communities, settler colonial states, as well as schools and other educative institutions.
