Bringing together scholars from diverse fields, this symposium addresses—but goes beyond—debates about the magnitude and importance of disparities in boys’ and girls’ mathematics outcomes. Despite differences in their perspectives, the presenters on this panel agree that gender disparities in mathematics outcomes are not inevitable and are influenced by socialization both outside and within schools. Presenters give particular focus to affective and classroom factors that shape girls’ and boys’ mathematics outcomes during elementary and middle grades. The symposium encompasses research on teacher expectations, teachers’ mathematics anxiety, student affect and goal orientations, and the impact these factors have on students’ mathematical confidence, interest and achievement. Implications for teacher education, policy, and future research are discussed.
