Evaluation of Performance-Driven School Accountability Interventions in Korea Versus the United States

Abstract

This symposium is designed to not only enhance our understanding of similarities and differences between Korea and the U.S. in their performance-driven school accountability policies but also draw generalizable lessons for many countries where the government adopted or considered similar types of interventions. The two sets of empirical papers will provide updated data and evidence on two related topics: (1) Supplemental Education Services (SES) in U.S. vs. After-School Programs in Korea; (2) School Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Interventions in U.S. vs. Academic Improvement Target Programs in Korea. The implementation and impact of related education policies in these two countries will be examined and compared. Common or unique facilitators and constraints that influence their policy processes and outcomes will be discussed.
