Accessing Doctoral Education: Enhancing the Socialization Process for Aspiring Scholars of Color

Abstract

The process of socialization into doctoral education has been evidenced to be integral to success in graduate programs for aspiring scholars (Austin, 2002; Gardner & Mendoza, 2010). But, this socialization process is even more critical for aspiring scholars of color who are often underrepresented in doctoral programs and in their fields more generally. This symposium explores how prospective and emerging scholars of color are socialized to the disciplinary norms and cultures of academia, both before and after they enroll in doctoral programs, in order to facilitate better access to graduate education for underrepresented students.
