Enhancing Leadership Development in the International Community

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 16

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

The International Study of the Preparation of Principals, currently being conducted in 13 countries, is designed to investigate the research question “How useful are principal preparation programs to novice principals?” This symposium will present Stage Three findings from Scotland, Kenya, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, and the United States. The symposium will highlight aspects of principals’ work lives that are most problematic and the degree to which they feel prepared to address those aspects. It also will profile principals’ pre-appointment learning experiences, ranging from the informal and loosely structured to the formal and tightly structured. The session will emphasize the types of leadership development needed for principals to serve the public good more effectively in the context of increasing pluralistic societies.
