Session Submission Summary

A Nested View of Democratic Leadership and Community: Agents of Change for the Public Good

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This session includes five short paper presentations with substantial time for discussion of the ideas presented. Taking a nested approach, the papers examine the practice of democratic leadership at the student, teacher, district and community levels. The three qualitative studies illustrate, in rich detail, how teachers and administrators have intentionally embraced opportunities for redesigning school and district systems and processes for increased inclusiveness and participation. The other two more theoretically-focused papers present new frameworks for understanding the practice of democracy in schools. This set of papers challenge readers to explore both familiar and less familiar aspects of school leadership and democratic community.
