Session Submission Summary

Reimagining Mathematics Teaching Quality for K-12 English Language Learners and Latina/o Students

Mon, April 16, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 221

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

To address the persistent learning opportunity gaps in mathematics for K-12 English language learners (ELL) and Latin@ students, we need to re-imagine the quality mathematics teaching for these growing populations in our public schools. In this session, scholars present findings from pre-service and in-service projects that seek to challenge and expand traditional notions of teacher quality that take into consideration mathematics, children’s mathematical thinking, language, and culture. The studies showcase various ways to document and operationalize dynamic constructs to provide a more comprehensive and robust picture of mathematics teacher quality for ELL and Latin@ students.
