Session Submission Summary

Teacher Preparation Before and During Full-Time Teaching: A Comparative Analysis of Learning to Teach

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 224

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

A primary debate within teacher preparation discourse centers on the efficacy of undergraduate and graduate programs compared with alternative routes towards certification, many of which place teachers directly into classrooms. Papers in this session seek to understand the experiences of these new urban teachers around issues such as race, teacher identity, teachers’ social networks, methodology of studying new teachers, and students’ literacy practices. Researchers draw from a longitudinal study using qualitative analysis of over 325 hours of interviews with over 70 practitioners. Interviewees represent multiple pathways, including TFA and Teaching Fellows teachers, as well as teachers from university pre-service programs.
