Session Submission Summary

Developing Ambitious Mathematics Teaching With an Equity Stance: Rethinking Routine Practice

Fri, April 13, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Fourth Level, North Port McNeill

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium challenges a conventional notion that attention to equity (e.g. issues related to race, class, culture, language, and gender) compromises exemplary mathematics instruction. Using the construct of ambitious mathematics teaching, each teacher education project will describe experiences and activities that they have designed to support pre-service and in-service teachers in developing routine teaching practices that are both ambitious and equitable, with attention to the tensions and leverage points that they have encountered. Through interaction with the audience, implications for mathematics teacher education will be addressed.
