Session Submission Summary

Race and Nation in Canadian History Education

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, West Room 111&112

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium will address the questions: What are the best approaches to history education in a nation with multiple stories, multiple perspectives, and even multiple nations? How should history education research inform practice in such a nation? The session will consider these questions from anglophone, francophone, and indigenous perspectives. Two current pan-Canadian initiatives with the aim of addressing these questions are described: The History Education Network and the Historical Thinking Project. The session offers a critique of the latter from perspectives of race and power in the production of history.
