Learning to Live Well: Developing, Deconstructing, and Sustaining an Aesthetic Way of Life With/in Arts-Based Curricula

Abstract

This session explores ways in which arts-based educational research provides insights into curricular change by challenging the role of the teacher/researcher and reconceptualizing outcomes for student learning. Each author presents a different perspective on relationship of self to curriculum and how these relationships are explored through ABER methods. Two papers present curriculum forming at a personal level, developing care of self through artistic practices. One paper addresses how curriculum forms at the community level, addressing how personal learning can be care for the larger group through reparative curriculum. The final paper addresses how teaching themes of care, incorporated at the state level of curriculum policy, legitimizes developing an aesthetic way of life as an explicit curricular outcome.
