Designing and Implementing Educator Performance Pay Programs: Lessons From the Field

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Educator Performance Pay is becoming an increasing common policy response to the need to improve teacher quality. The symposium presents papers from three large studies, implemented in diverse settings, on current attempts to implement performance pay. The first paper is a mixed methods evaluation of 34 participating in the federal Teacher Incentive Fund program. The second study uses large surveys to compare teacher responses to performance pay across three districts. The final paper presents results of a mixed methods study of principal performance pay in a large urban district to suggest which aspects of a multi-faceted educator performance pay program appear to be motivating changes in principals’ practices. Findings from these studies offer lessons to the field and practitioners alike.
