Affordances and Constraints of Virtual Worlds for Formal and Informal Learning

Abstract
This symposium will examine affordances and constraints of virtual worlds for learning and identity construction through five studies of innovative uses of the virtual world Second Life (SL). The studies represent different educational contexts and content as varied as a history lesson, and science inquiry in a Korean and US high school; role playing in nursing and medical education; and identity exploration in a virtual café. The objective of the session is to focus on the aspects of embodiment and sense of place as they relate to each study; and share experiences and learning from development and implementation of these projects.
