Session Submission Summary

Interest Development and Its Relation to Academic Motivation

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Grand Ballroom Level, North Grand Ballroom B

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium provides a forum for considering the relation between interest development and academic motivation. Each participant brings a distinct set of research questions and methods to the session, although each is working with the same conceptualization of interest, the Four-Phase Model of Interest Development. By specifying phases in the development of interest, this model supports educators’ abilities to motivate their students. Presenters will (a) summarize their research questions and key findings, providing definitions and explanations of their research methods; (b) address the theoretical links between interest and academic motivation as undertaken in their research, and (c) identify next steps for research on interest and academic motivation.
