Tue, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This symposium presents findings from a multi-institution, mixed-method, three-year study of teacher turnover and retention in New York City’s middle schools. It draws on survey and case study research to address shared questions across four papers. In turn, the papers examine: (1) the key organizational factors that influence teachers’ willingness or ability to remain in or move from their current or past school assignment; (2) leadership as a key organizational factor affecting retention (as identified in paper #1); (3) the key organizational factors that influence the retention of male teachers of color; and (4) the effect of teacher turnover on schools’ functioning. Collectively, the papers can inform policy and administrative decisions that improve staffing in middle schools.
