Session Submission Type: Symposium
In a period of national attention to health, research on the implications of health status for students’ school success is growing, with strong evidence that young people’s health affects their cognitive development, social-emotional well-being, capacity to cope with stress, and ability to attend school (CDC, 2009; Fiscella & Kitzman 2009; Hass & Fosse, 2008). In this interactive symposium, four researchers share data from three school districts to examine critically questions related to the ways in which educators, health care providers, students, and community members are engaging the issues of child and adolescent health and wellness. Although health status, knowledge, and behaviors affect students across class, the focus of this session is on youth and educators in urban, low-income, minority communities.
