Fulfillment of Self Through Adherence to Law: Formative Justice and Educational Politics

Abstract

Robbie McClintock’s formulation of the concept of formative justice, describing educational subjects’ adherence to the laws that shape their relation to the world, has attracted the attention of a number of scholars because of its potential to reconnect the language of educational politics and policy to the various forms of human flourishing that these policies support. This panel serves as an exposition and discussion of McClintock’s ideas on formative justice through an examination of the concept’s roots in Plato’s and Rousseau’s ideals of education and through an application of the concept in a number of contemporary fields of educational scholarship.
