Session Submission Summary

Adolescent Reading Motivation: Building Stronger Interventions

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, North Junior Ballroom C

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium will present research on developing interventions to improve adolescent reading motivation and achievement. We will begin with a presentation on the development and validation of a new adaptive measure of adolescent reading motivation that can help us understand intervention effects. The second paper will present profiles of rural middle school students’ reading motivation, and the third will look at situated reading motivations mediating the relationships between reading instruction and adolescents’ general reading motivations. The final two presentations will detail interventions to improve student choice and class structure in order to increase engagement and reading achievement in middle school classrooms.
