Abstract

As cross-cultural methodologies were developed by researchers interested in the description and study of dimensions of culture, cross-context methodologies are now being used by learning scientists to observe and understand how context is constituted, perceived, and experienced by learners. Motivated by situated accounts of learners as immersed in local activities and practices, by increasing interest in supporting students across learning settings, and by questions of students’ developmental trajectories (e.g., identity development), researchers are more often attending to the range and impact of settings in which learners participate. Researchers in this session will describe cross-context research studies that vary in purpose, the theoretical perspectives motivating cross-context analysis, and in the methods used to trace learners and their trajectories across contexts.
