Redesigning Teacher Education: Learning From the Past

Abstract

This symposium probes three cases of comprehensive efforts to redesign teacher education over the last fifty years to make it more oriented toward practice: competency-based teacher education (1960s and 1970s), the Holmes Group (1980s and 1990s), and Teachers for a New Era (1990s and 2000s). These analyses reveal persistent barriers to improvement in teacher education. The purpose of the symposium is to offer alternative analytic perspectives on the challenge of improving the professional training of teachers that can inform research on teacher education reform as well as suggest potential resources for managing the obstacles to change.
