Session Submission Type: Symposium
This session will consider the processes and outcomes of school transformation, turnaround, and restart initiatives in Chicago and Philadelphia that have proposed to effect dramatic improvement in the lowest-performing schools. While policymakers across the country consider strategies for “turning around” low-performing schools, research on the challenges and benefits of such models is limited. This symposium will report on research into the reform initiatives instituted by Chicago Public Schools over the past decade and the recent Renaissance Schools Initiative launched by the School District of Philadelphia. Presentations will focus on student enrollment, school staffing, school climate, parent and community engagement, and student outcomes.
