Thinking Ourselves “Out of” and “Into” Visual Research Methodologies in Education

Abstract

This symposium brings together five scholars to examine the emerging phenomena of visual research methodologies in education. Speaking from, and out of their experiences of conducting visual research inquiries in Canada, Ireland, and Japan, presenters will examine visual research from the following five perspectives: (i) as a pedagogical practice, (ii) as a collaborative and participatory practice, (iii) as a relational practice, (iv) as an interpretative practice, and (v) as a dialogical practice. Examining the practice of visual research in education from these multiple theoretical perspectives, informed by five empirical research studies, affords a unique opportunity to think in rich and expansive ways about the possibilities that visual research methodologies offer to inquiring into and making sense of education phenomena.
