Abstract

A recent explosion of research from the neurobiological, behavioral, and social sciences has illuminated new knowledge about children’s learning and development. At the same time, changing conditions in our increasingly global, competitive, and technological world are altering expectations for what children know and should be able to do. Schooling is changing, family structures are changing, and how children spend their out-of-school time is changing. Some of these changes represent dangers to childhood, contradicting what is known about learning and development. This symposium examines, from cross-disciplinary perspectives, emerging knowledge about learning and development in relation to these dangers.
