There is growing interest among educational researchers in how we assess complex learning with and during digital gameplay. In addition to traditional assessment approaches (e.g., multiple choice items, short answer, and student essays), capacities to make inferences about student learning in conjunction with ongoing learning activities are promising. The objective of this session is to explore different environments with a focus on varying approaches to assessing student learning. We are particularly interested in the cognitive and social affordances of game-based learning environments. The presenters will provide examples of game-based learning environments that provide traditional and emerging assessment models and will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each in a dynamically changing field that still stresses high stakes testing.
