The Monstrous Other: Exploring the Intersections of Youth Culture and Critical Pedagogy in a Monster-Making World

Abstract

This panel seeks to use jagodzinksi’s framing of youth as the monstrous other to engage a range of topics that integrate, interrogate, and complicate the contested terrains of youth culture within the theoretico-philosophical framing of critical pedagogy. Central to the invited themes of this panel is an explicit focus on the “nuances” and "fringe" pedagogical work advanced by scholars and cultural workers at large. Moreover, The panelists seek to examine how critical pedagogy, designer capitalism (jagodzinksi, 2004) and other disciplinary realms (e.g., curriculum theory, cultural theory, radical philosophy, etc.) address, confront, and offer hints to engage children/youth culture in/through/with/and beyond popular culture, music, television, theory, pedagogy, vampires, and curriculum.
