Symposium on Stanford’s Teach-In on Undocumented Students in the United States

Abstract

With nearly 1.8 million undocumented youths living in the United States, the issue of undocumentation has become a forefront concern for educators and practitioners in the university community. In this session, we report on how current U.S. immigration policies affect undocumented students and their access to higher education. We also challenge the myth that undocumentation is only a Latino issue by demonstrating its effects on the Asian and Pacific Islander community. We conclude by discussing how to plan and implement a university-wide Teach-In on undocumented students in light of our experiences of holding an annual Teach-In at Stanford University. This presentation highlights the magnitude of the undocumented student population and the consequences they face in view of current immigration policies.
