Recent national surveys attest to the increasing amount of time children and adolescents spend with digital media, in particular video games (see Rideout et al., 2010). This obvious appeal has fostered research on the linkage between video game play and the enhancement of cognitive skills and learning in both formal and informal educational settings. Furthermore, well-designed digital games embody some of the “best practices” of education (Collins & Halverson, 2009; Gee, 2003; Plass et al., 2009). This symposium presents current research on the role of digital game play in children and adolescents’ cognitive development and learning. Individual papers include studies on video games and vocabulary and reading comprehension skills; scientific reasoning; executive functions; and problem solving skills.
