Session Submission Type: Symposium
Some research universities have launched major initiatives to more directly link their scholarly enterprises to community-based knowledge production in order to collaboratively solve the pressing problems of the age. These initiatives require transformed research, teaching, and service missions and corresponding changes in the structure and operations of multiple core university functions. They also require transformed relationships with a broad range of community partners, from schools, government agencies, community advocacy and service organizations, to private businesses. These initiatives raise complex ethical and epistemic issues as well as practical challenges that bear on their efficacy. This symposium examines these initiatives focusing particularly on the experience of two universities – one private with a well-established record, and another a large multi-campus state system with a new initiative in its second year.
