Abstract

The purpose of this symposium is to sensitize educational researchers and theorists to how the news media reports on issues related to public education. While literature examining how the news media reports on and frames particular aspects of public education—for instance, testing, policy issues, and curriculum—continues to grow, it is still relatively untouched terrain as a discursive field of research. The presenters in this panel endeavor to add to this body of research literature through the critical examination of different major news outlets, film, and new media, to illustrate that the media is an important field for educational researchers to explore if they are to better understand the information regarding education made available to the public.
