Whiteness in Hollywood: Race, Poverty, and Education

Abstract

This symposium will present four perspectives on films that feature on education and the relationships between White women and youth of color. Using a critical race, womanist and feminist approach presenters will discuss how the images of White women and/or whiteness is presented as the savior of racially diverse, low-socioeconomic, urban youth. Each of the presenters will critically respond to the images depicted and what those images may suggest to a broader discourse on race, gender, and poverty. Panel members will also discuss in depth the impact of these themes on their classroom experiences as graduate students, educators, and women.
