Multilevel Latent Variable Models: The Next Generation

Abstract

There have been considerable advances in multilevel modeling techniques over the last two decades, including advances in the specific area of multilevel latent variable modeling. However, there are still very few didactic presentations of such modeling approaches and even fewer applications in the educational literature. This symposium presents two paper pairs: the first pair provides an explanation and illustration of multilevel factor analysis and the second pair provides an explanation and illustration of multilevel latent class analysis. In both pairs, the emphasis is on models that permit different latent structures at the within- and between-levels. These models allow for a much richer and more nuanced measure of environment whereby individual-level variability informs the measurement model for the context.
