Session Submission Type: Paper Session
The interrelated theoretical perspectives of social semiotics and multimodality invite us to attend to a wider range of modes (i.e., speech, writing, images, gestures, movements, sounds, etc.) to represent, communicate, and assess meaning. This paper session will explore a variety of alternative assessments through multimodal and semiotics lenses. Analyses of alternative assessment portfolios as well as images created by students are among the assessments that will be examined.
Alternative Assessment Portfolios: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Nancy S. Stockall, Sam Houston State University
Social Semiotics at Display: A Multimodal Analysis of a Child’s Writing - Jennifer Moon Ro, SUNY - College at Fredonia
