Session Submission Type: Invited Session

Abstract

Through an interactive discussion with panelists, this session will examine the effects of the changing economic context on various aspects of the professoriate both in the U.S. and in Canada. The session will include attention to the short- and long-term aspects of the new fiscal realities that are facing higher education institutions, and the implications of institutional responses to the changing economic context for faculty (e.g., increased attention to measuring faculty productivity, increasing use of
non-standing and contingent faculty, closure and consolidation of academic programs, efforts to diversify the faculty). The session will also consider what these changes mean for higher education research.
