Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This roundtable session brings together three papers that offer a view of tracking and detracking in Finland, Austria, Italy and South Korea. Finland detracked its math courses in 1985, providing a unique context for studying math teacher subject specific views on detracking. The second paper, focusing on Austria and Italy, contrasts students’ college going expectations in a country that tracks its youth early in their academic careers against a country that tracks its youth late. The final paper takes a detailed look at the diverse factors (high school track level being only one) affecting choice of college major in South Korea.
