Session Submission Summary

Queering Institutions and Using Queer Institutions

Tue, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This roundtable will take participants on a journey, from elementary school to university and out into the community. The discussion starts with an examination of the role lesbian- and gay-themed picture books have in reaffirming a heteronormative agenda. Following comes a comparative perspective of how school board decision-making and school-level policy implementation interact and can lead to discriminatory experiences for LGBT students and staff. The third paper examines the paths queer students take to transition between high school and post-secondary studies. The roundtable concludes with a call to retain identity-based community youth centers, even after “equality” is achieved.
