Possibilities for Education: Progress in Prevention Research

Abstract

This panel seeks to disseminate the findings and recommendations of the 2009 Institute of Medicine and National Academies of Science report entitled Preventing Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Disorders among Young People: Progress and Possibilities and to highlight it’s application to education. Panel presenters include three members of the IOM committee: Anthony Biglan, Irwin Sandler, and Teresa LaFromboise along with Mark Greenberg who served as a consultant to the committee and who has written extensively school-based prevention. Panelists will first provide an overview of the IOM Report, its findings, and recommendations pertinent to educational policy and research. The report takes a broad multi-level approach to prevention of problem outcomes and promotion of healthy child development, and highlights the significant findings from a large number of randomized trials of the success of multiple prevention and promotion interventions. They will focus upon a particular set of studies that have implications for educational settings such as interventions in school environments.
