Learning "In-Between" Cultural Worlds: An Immigrant Perspective on Education

Abstract

This session brings together research with Moroccan immigrant families in the Netherlands, and Mexican immigrant families in the U.S., to examine the particular kinds of learning that are fostered in situations of cultural contact. Working with youth and with parents in different national, cultural and social contexts, we ask not how immigrants “assimilate” to their host country, but how their practices, values and perspectives are shaped by their negotiations of distinct cultural worlds. In doing this, we contribute to discussions of the transmission of cultural practices and values as well as their transformation and transmutation, identifying emergent forms of practice and new and previously unrecognized skills. We draw implications for the education, learning and development of immigrants in educational contexts.
