Associations of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE), AERA’s Organization of Institutional Affiliates (OIA): A New Vision for Indigenous Students: A Deans’ Accord on Indigenous Education

Abstract

For some time the vital needs of Indigenous learners has been a great concern in a number of countries. Using a highly consultative process over several years, the Association of Canadian Deans of Education developed an Accord on Indigenous Education modeled on Accords formulated by the United Nations. This document outlines a vision for Indigenous learning in Canada along with a set of concrete goals for education faculties and other institutions. Ratified by the Deans of Education and launched in Montreal in 2010, with support from a number of prominent Indigenous leaders, the Accord represents the ongoing commitment of Canadian educational leaders to support Indigenous identities, cultures, languages, values, ways of knowing, and knowledge systems in all Canadian learning settings.
