Abstract

This symposium highlights Canadian educational psychology research about programs, contexts, and instructional practices that support at-risk learners to succeed in school and in transitions from school. We examine this topic from many perspectives, in research conducted across the country. These include reporting a case of a teacher who thrives on teaching struggling youth, and the perspectives of at-risk youth and their educators about why work-based education programs engage these students and facilitate transition to the workplace. We listen to Aboriginal youth and their teachers on what enables these students to succeed, and we review the challenges when young adults with learning disabilities enter post-secondary education. Finally we consider how partnerships and collaboration facilitate inclusion of students at-risk for many different reasons.
