Abstract

Despite decades of feminist activism and struggle for women’s rights, women continue to be under represented in many spheres and are subject to systemic stereotyping and discrimination. Yet some have argued that gender no longer matters; instead there is a shift to framing concerns using the language of diversity and equity. How are gender issues informed and shaped by popular media? How have women’s successes and failures in the public and private sphere shaped conceptions of gender-informed policy debates in Canada and around the world? How do concepts such as intersectionality, gender performance, diversity, difference, equity, globalization, class, inclusion, racialization, Indigeneity, multiple subjectivities/identities—inform consideration of the question “Does gender still matter?”
