Promoting Higher-Order Thinking Skills Using Information and Communication Technology: Teaching Practices From Malaysian Educators

Abstract

The advent of the digital and information age has made the development of creative thinking and higher-order thinking skills essential to success in many areas of life. This research study investigated faculty members’ teaching experiences and practices concerning the ICT utilization to promote HOTs in the instructional contexts of Malaysian polytechnics. A mixed methods approach was used. Three hundred and eighty nine polytechnic faculty members’ responded to a 75-item survey. Additionally, 35 lesson plans were analyzed. Findings showed that Malaysian polytechnic faculty members’ recognized the use of ICT in their instruction as critical to promote HOTs. However, their teaching practices using ICT in the classroom were not fully carried out in ways that would facilitate HOTs development among students.
