Teachers’ Moral Perceptions of Standardized Student Behavioral Management Systems

Abstract

This qualitative study explores first-year teachers perceptions of the standardized student behavioral management systems used in schools run by Charter Management Organizations (CMOs). An exploration of teachers’ lived experiences offers the opportunity to gain insight beyond the outcomes of these systems, typically measured by student academic results and into the means by which these outcomes are supposed to be achieved. The conceptual framework organizing this research is informed by psychological research on moral identity, literature from the field of teacher education on identity development, as well as sociological research on the intersection of individuals and their workplace.
