Developing and Utilizing Teachers’ TARGETS Self-Report Survey

Abstract

This paper presents the development and utilization of ש self-report survey assessing teachers’ mastery goals emphasis in each of the TARGETS categories (Patrick, et al., 2001). Items validation included cognitive pre-testing and observations. Data from 95 Israeli teachers was used to test the reliability of scales. Data from 5th-8th grade students (N=1356), who studied science with 35 of these teachers, was used to utilize the new scales in an HLM analysis; the relations between teachers’ TARGETS practices and students’ motivation for science learning in and out of school as well as teacher’s perceived mastery goals emphasis was tested. Results supported the validation of the scales and offered new insights into the influences on adolescents’ motivation and its decline with age.
