Identifying Principles and Practices of Caring in the Work of Peace Education

Abstract

Effective relationships are integral to the successful education of students, and caring is an anchor in developing effective relationships. Thus, teachers need to both create caring relationships and help their students develop the capacity to care. Much has been done to advance the education profession; yet deepening disparities exist in access and quality. Drawing on peace theory, the ethics and strategies of care, and concepts of developmental relationships, this roundtable explores the benefits, challenges, and significance of principles and practices of caring in our work. Does contextualizing care advance connectedness with our students? Will identifying principles and practices of caring help sustain faculty in their work? Do peace researchers and educators view their work as a form of caring?
