A Think-Aloud Study of Preservice Secondary English Teachers’ Selection of Web Sources for Their Lesson Planning

Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Our study was to examine how pre-service secondary English teachers select web sources when they design a lesson plan. Five senior English majors, currently enrolled in a secondary reading course at a four-year teacher education program, participated in the study. Individual participants identified three complementary web sources deemed useful for teaching 11th graders about the themes of The Great Gatsby, using 45 minutes, and then developed a resource list with a summary of the content and structure of their chosen sources. Results indicate that participants’ online text selection for classroom use can be addressed in two ways: Teacher knowledge related to content, pedagogy, and technology, and the integrative use of these knowledge types; Teacher new literacies skills to identify online sources.
